Kona's New Competition: Exploring Kauai Coffee Country

In my next life, I want to be a coffee tree on the island of Kauai.

After our spectacular visit to Waimea Canyon our car made an impulsive detour on the way home, down a little country road in the town of Kalaheo, following signs to the Kauai Coffee Company.

We found the visitor center in a sea of coffee trees, high up on a hill. Acre upon acre of oversized bushes spread out around us, row upon row rolling down the gentle slopes right to the edge of the sea. The amazing views just don't get much better than that, and I decided right there those were the luckiest trees in the world.

The landscape was lovely and I could have stared at it for days, but the strong scent of coffee wafting from the nearby visitor center soon drew our attention away.

A friendly staff person pointed us straight to the tasting area in the back. And there we found two dozen cannisters of freshly brewed, full-strength samples of homegrown coffee, just waiting to be tasted. Every style of roast and bean the company grew and manufactured was on full display. Even decaf.

"But you won't be wanting any of that," the staffer assured us. We looked at each other and shrugged, wondering if maybe we had the desperate look of coffee addicts written clearly on our faces.

Dan wanted to see just how these beans are grown:

By the time we hit the giftshop I knew why they have you sample the coffee FIRST: all that caffeine put us into shopping overdrive. We spent only a few minutes in the store, but somehow enough coffee-related food and novelities jumped off the shelves into our arms to satisfy our entire gift list for the folks back home.

And yes, we remembered to grab some coffee for our breakfast the next day too:
