Smoothie Fruits

What could be better on a gorgeous blue-sky day than a cool breakfast smoothie, whipped up fresh in your own kitchen? I have to admit I can't think of many things that even come close.

Smoothies are great after a workout, especially in hot weather. The fruit and juices give you all the fluids, antioxidants and electrolytes you need to replace those lost in exercise. And just by throwing a little yogurt, soy milk or protein powder to the mix, you can add strength-building qualities as well.

They also make a delicious, nutritious meal when your day starts early, or you have to work through lunch. They're neat, transportable (unlike breakfast cereal or a hot lunch) and easy to digest when you're on the go.

I've become such a smoothie addict that a blender is a must in my home- and even in my homes away from home. Indeed I've enjoyed many a smoothie in our NYC apartment, at the North Carolina beach rental, and especially here in Hawaii. The ingredients are typically easy to find, and freeze well.

All kinds of fruits make a good smoothie- to me the fun is in mixing it up. It's become a bit of a game for us to find the freshest fruits at the best prices, here in Hawaii. Which is more of a challenge than you might think: the islands import many more of their fruits and vegetables from the mainland and abroad, than they grow here at home.

So far we've had our best luck finding smoothie fixings among the many produce vendors in Chinatown. I'll talk more about our adventures in Chinatown, in a future post.

Yum!

I do that too with the ripe bananas. Then defrost from 15-20 seconds in the microwave. Neat trick!
