A Brief Glossary for New Zealand Tourists

This travel blog wouldn't be complete if we didn't include a glossary of some common words and phrases that we kept bumping into while we were in New Zealand. Hopefully you'll find it useful when you visit this wonderful country!

haka: a traditional Maori dance and song, usually dance of defiance or a war dance. See also the All Blacks and their well-known haka done before each rugby match.

hongi: the traditional Maori greeting in New Zealand, a greeting characterized by pressing noses together.

hangi: a Maori style of cooking in an earthen oven lined by special hot stones. You'll see signs advertising "hangi" on roadsides; often the meat is pork.

kia ora: hello, thank you, good luck.

kiwi: either: 1) a New Zealander 2) a small brown fuzzy fruit that's green on the inside, or 3) a funny looking, cute, flightless and nocturnal bird.

moko: tattoos on the faces and thighs of Maori men, also tattoos on the lips and chins of Maori women.

stonkered: to be utterly defeated by something ("I'm stonkered--I couldn't eat another bite").

block yourself up, or to get blocked up: to apply sunscreen liberally to any exposed skin.

bludger: someone who is cheap, a moocher.

Food-related glossary:
chips: french fries
crisps: potato chips
silverbeet: swiss chard
capsicum: pepper, typically refers to bell peppers
courgette: zucchini (also a "marrow" is a large, overgrown zucchini)
kumara: sweet potato
